RO vs Brita: What's the Actual Difference?

Brita and similar jug filters are genuinely useful for what they do — they're just doing a much smaller job than people sometimes assume. A jug filter is a single activated carbon cartridge. It's good at reducing chlorine taste and some limescale flecks. It is not built to remove dissolved solids, heavy metals, fluoride, or microplastics, because a carbon cartridge alone isn't fine enough to catch them.

An under-sink reverse osmosis system is a different category of product. Water passes through multiple stages — sediment, carbon, and critically, a reverse osmosis membrane fine enough to block particles and dissolved compounds that a jug filter's cartridge simply passes straight through.

Side by side

Chlorine taste: both handle this reasonably well. Limescale and hardness minerals: a jug filter barely touches this; RO systems are built for it. Lead and heavy metals: not meaningfully reduced by a jug filter; a genuine strength of RO. Fluoride and microplastics: same story — outside what a single carbon cartridge can do.

Cost and convenience, over time

A jug filter cartridge is cheap upfront but needs replacing every 4–6 weeks with regular use, and you're limited to whatever fits in the jug at a time. An RO system costs more to install, but the cartridges last months rather than weeks, it's plumbed in rather than something you refill by hand, and the output is consistent rather than dependent on how recently you changed the filter.

Neither is "wrong" — a jug filter is a reasonable stopgap or a fine choice if chlorine taste is genuinely your only concern. But if hardness, lead pipework, fluoride or microplastics are what you're actually trying to deal with, a jug filter won't get you there, and it's worth knowing that before you buy one expecting otherwise.
